About us

Screenshot 2025-12-06 at 09.40.44.png

We are an expanding  informal global consortium of academics working together to provide networked national mapping platforms that offer standardised open spatial data on buildings and landscapes for the public good.

Our purpose is to to reduce research costs & overlaps, and accelerate cross country problem-solving relating toUN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

 Platforms & Data

Screenshot 2025-12-06 at 09.40.44.png

The Colouring Cities Research Programme (CCRP) oversees a network of
open source national
mapping platforms. These provide microspatial data on buildings and the non-built environment
All CCRP platforms are decentralised and managed by academic partners at country level. All are networked using common CCRP open -source code & identical interfaces.

Our CCRP platforms provide free access to structured open spatial data relating to the following 12 categories. Within these, around 150 data classes provide data on buildings, cities, and landscapes. The amount of data in each platform will differ as this will depend on accessibility of data, scale of collective contribution & activity of academic partners.

CCRP platforms are unique in that they integrate four methods of data collection:
Open datasets & Computation Inference, moderated by academia,
Crowdsourcing, & Live streaming of official data.

Country platforms & Global Hubs

We currently work with over 200 researchers in over 40 institutions across 35 countries.

We also have 7 informal Global Hubs, to enable regular meetings to take place and to help global region network development and resource sharing. Hub leads,  are also represented on CCRP Operations Group which work on long-term strategy and strategic collaborations. All CCRP group members kindly contribute time as part of their existing research.

   Research Groups

Screenshot 2025-12-06 at 09.40.44.png

CCRP Research Groups co-work informally across countries, to rapidly
combine specific research expertise needed to tackle urgent & commonly found SDG related problems.  Click on our current international research groups below to explore CCRP co-working on UN SDG priority areas.

CCRP Expert Groups advise on core data categories or classes core data classes for CCRP platforms, on data standardisation, & on potential ethical & security issues.
They are initiated & led by  researchers actively
involved in national CCRP platforms wishing to pool their expertise & co-work on specific common issues with international colleagues.
Joint papers, open methods, case studies, templates,  as well as new data
classes, open datasets & open code and open methods are generated through these groups, and then disseminated via the CCRP network..
